Things You Should Know

What is Volunteering?

Volunteering is the giving of time and energy, which can bring measurable benefits to the volunteer, individual beneficiaries, groups and organisations, communities, environment and society at large. It is a choice undertaken of one's own free will, and is not motivated primarily for financial gain or for a wage or salary.

You cannot be forced to volunteer.  This goes completely against the ethos of what volunteering is about.  We see volunteering as a really positive experience with many benefits, but it has to be an individual's own decision.

You should not be out of pocket as a result of your volunteering. The majority of organisations will cover your expenses whilst volunteering, though there may be some that are not financially able to cover costs.

This might include reasonable travel costs to get to and from your volunteering or the cost of a meal if you volunteer for a full day.

Each organisation has a different policy and procedure for claiming expenses so you will need to check before you start.

Equal Opportunities

Volunteering England describes Equal Opportunities as: Practices that promote the possibility of fair and equal chances for all to develop their full potential, in all aspects of life, and the removal of barriers to discrimination and disadvantage experienced by certain groups.

Volunteer Centre Lambeth and our partner organisations work hard to ensure that volunteering is open to all and that volunteers are treated with fairness.

All volunteer-involving organisations should have an insurance policy that covers volunteers.
